Apple OS X Version Summary
Apple released its OS X (OS ten) operating system to the public in 2001. It is a Unix-based system, as opposed to previous versions of the operating system. Since 2001 all versions of the operating system have been designated by a numbering system beginning with 10 in the format 10.X.X.
Apple assigned an internal codename to the projects leading to each new release. These have been based primarily on large cats. Since the introduction of Jaguar (Mac OS 10.2) in 2002 these have been commonly used in identifying the specific operating system versions.
