iPad Review - To Buy Or Not To Buy?
Note: Please see iPad Review - Basics for information on the specifications and features of the iPad.
So should you or shouldn’t you? Over 2 million people have purchased iPads. Should you be the next one?
But first, let’s look at who has bought them so far. There is not yet a reliable survey out as to the overall demographics of the people buying/using the iPad. However, the information available indicates the group is weighted toward:
  • Apple aficionados – basically people who like anything Apple and probably already own one or two Apple devices (plus a few retired ones).
  • People with the financial resources to support the purchase of an expensive device like the iPad.
  • Young adults to the lower end of the middle age group (more or less from 18 – 44). It’s not for children and hasn’t caught on with seniors.
  • People who tend to surf the web, play games, and watch movies on their electronic devices. Keep in mind, for other purposes it doesn’t replace a desktop or laptop.
So, why buy one? There are, of course, pros and cons, but it depends first on what you might use it for. Let’s look at various possibilities.
  • Curiosity – if you are just wondering what all the fuss is about (and you are willing to shell out the equivalent of the cost of a desktop) it might be worth it. You can experiment with it and marvel at its slick interface.
  • Reading books – it can be used for reading books and many books are available for it through the iTunes store. However, there are other, more economical, choices (such as Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook) which serve this purpose better.
  • Casual browsing the web – if you enjoy surfing the web, mainly for recreational purposes, it’s a great instrument.
  • Playing games – There are quite a few games available for the iPad.
  • Writing causal emails and other short documents – the iPad can be used for checking and writing emails and writing other short documents. However using the electronic keyboard on the display is not suited for more extensive composition (it should be noted a wireless keyboard can be purchased for use with the iPad). Keep in mind the iPad must be connected wirelessly to a printer.
