Why Did Something Called "Messenger" Suddenly Appear?
Q - P.L. from Englewood, CO. asks: I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010, and Internet Explorer 8. I transferred all my data, got it set up like I wanted, and it was working fine. Then one day I noticed a new icon on my Status Bar for something called "Messenger." There was also a new set of icons at the top of my browser. I did not install anything new and have no idea where these came from. Should I be concerned? What can I do to remove these, or are they part of Windows 7 and I should just live with them? Thanks for your help.
A: No need for concern. Microsoft has recently released a new version of what it terms “Windows Live Essentials 2011.” This is not a part of the Windows operating system, but rather a suite of free software designed to integrate with Windows, Microsoft online services, and each other.
The software available through Windows Live Essentials 2011 includes Messenger, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Windows Live Mesh, Writer, Family Safety, Mail, Messenger Companion, Bing Bar, and Outlook Connector Pack.
Windows Live Essentials 2011 is not required to run Windows. However, it is being distributed through Windows Updates (which we have recommended be configured to automatically download and install updates for security reasons for most users). Even though you didn’t initially have it installed (it does not come with Windows 7), it may appear after updates to the operating system have been installed.
Some people find certain programs within Windows Live Essentials 2011 very handy. Others find it annoying. All or any portion of the software can be removed without adversely affecting the Windows operating system. Read about how to remove Windows Live Essentials or a portion of it.
If after uninstalling it you find at some point there is a program within Windows Live Essentials 2011 you would like to try, the full suite of software or individual programs can be downloaded and installed manually. Read more about installing all or part of Windows Live Essentials including a link to download.
